The picture might have been taken yesterday, except for two or three things. And, oh yes, there is the off-duty member of the occupying Nazi hordes, who is also, patiently, waiting his turn to cross.
This is, in fact, the summer of 1942, near the mid-point of the Nazi occupation of the French capital.
After the liberation he was arrested but never prosecuted, and spent the remainder of his career as a wedding and portrait photographer in a small town west of Paris. Recently, a volume of Zucca’s controversial wartime pictures of Paris was published in France.

The photographs portray, for the most part, a remarkably familiar city, calm, chic, content and pleasure and fashion-loving.
